Sea Around Us - Indian Ocean launches a new initiative: The Freshwater Hub

The Sea Around Us - Indian Ocean at the University of Western Australia is proud to announce the launch of the Freshwater Hub — an initiative dedicated to investigating the sustainable management and conservation of freshwater resources in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond. The Hub is a response to the growing need for evidence-based research and collaboration in freshwater ecosystems. This initiative is led by Dr Wanja Nyingi, who has over 25 years’ experience in aquatic ecology.

The Freshwater Hub's mission is centered on three key pillars: Research, Training, and Impact. Through extensive research, the Hub will focus on freshwater ecosystem health and the effects of fisheries, aiming to identify and protect critical habitats. By offering training programs, the Hub will foster the next generation of freshwater science experts. Lastly, the Hub will drive impact by providing data-driven insights for policy development and engaging communities to promote stewardship and sustainable management of freshwater resources.

The Freshwater Hub seeks to build a strong Community of Practice focused on aquatic ecology and freshwater fisheries, bringing together researchers, conservationists, and policymakers in a collaborative effort to safeguard our planet’s freshwater systems.

The launch of the Hub marks a significant step forward in the global effort to protect and sustainably manage freshwater resources.

We invite anyone interested in the conservation of these vital ecosystems to join us in this important mission. Visit the Freshwater Hub to find out more.
