Want to have an impact in marine conservation and global fisheries? Study with the Sea Around Us – Indian Ocean

Expression of interest for PhD scholarship candidates

The Sea Around Us – Indian Ocean under the leadership of Professor Dirk Zeller at the University of Western Australia is looking for highly qualified PhD candidates interested in conducting ‘big-data’ and meta-analysis research on fisheries and fisheries conservation issues at the ocean-basin scale. If this is of interest to you, then consider applying for a PhD Scholarship at the University of Western Australia (UWA) in Perth. For details, check out www.scholarships.uwa.edu.au/futurestudents/postgrad.

Please only consider applying after consultation with Professor Zeller. There is currently one annual round for these competitive scholarships, usually during February-April of each year.

The University of Western Australia offers a limited number of these scholarships to both domestic (i.e., Australian) and international PhD candidates each year to work with leading researchers to address some of the world’s growing challenges, such as that of over-exploitation of ocean resources. Candidates should be academically outstanding students (i.e., First Class Honours or Masters degrees) who are eager to advance meaningful, high output research, and who have not completed or are engaged in a PhD elsewhere. Scholarships are awarded over three years, subject to satisfactory progress. This is the normal duration of PhD programs in Australia, as there is normally no graduate course work required (unlike in the North American system).

Beyond being outstanding scholarship opportunities, this is a great way to work closely with the Sea Around Us – Indian Ocean (http://seaaroundus-io.org/) and the global Sea Around Us network and initiative at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada (http://www.seaaroundus.org/). Professor Zeller also regularly collaborates and partners with Professor Jessica Meeuwig and the UWA Marine Futures Lab (http://www.meeuwig.org/). Emphasis is on big-data science at the ocean-basin scale and globally, and research projects focus on high written output in the scientific literature, accompanied by public and media outreach. Besides the excellent professional development opportunities of being part of this global network of leading researchers, you also get to live very close to great beaches in the beautiful city of Perth.

The Sea Around Us – Indian Ocean was launched in July/August 2017 as the first regional ‘branch’ of the global Sea Around Us research initiative that celebrates its 20 year anniversary in 2019. Please contact Dirk Zeller directly (dirk.zeller@uwa.edu.au) for potential suitability and likely projects. Suitable candidates will be encouraged to apply for scholarships after extensive discussions and after a project has been agreed upon. Early contact is essential, well before scholarship application deadline. Relevant background information on the purpose of and research conducted by the Sea Around Us can also be found via the material at www.seaaroundus.org, www.seaaroundus.org/articles/ and Dirk’s publications profile at http://seaaroundus-io.org/people-dirk-zeller/.  For more information, see http://www.scholarships.uwa.edu.au/futurestudents/postgrad.
